Estimated GFR (eGFR)

Normal range ≥ 90 (normal kidney function) mL/min/1.73 m² (≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m² SI). Specimen: Serum creatinine (calculated).

Also known as: glomerular filtration rate, estimated GFR.

Reference range

This result is reported qualitatively or as a one-sided threshold rather than a two-sided numeric band.

What is the normal range for Estimated GFR (eGFR)?

The standard teaching reference range for Estimated GFR (eGFR) is ≥ 90 (normal kidney function) mL/min/1.73 m² in conventional units, or ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m² in SI units. This value is measured in serum creatinine (calculated).

A commonly taught critical (panic) value is < 15 mL/min/1.73 m² indicates kidney failure. Critical results are reported to the provider immediately under your facility's policy.

Reference ranges vary by laboratory, method, age, sex, and population — always use the range printed on the actual result.

Above the range

Common causes of a high Estimated GFR (eGFR)

  • Normal or hyperfiltration (early diabetes)

Below the range

Common causes of a low Estimated GFR (eGFR)

  • Chronic kidney disease (stages by eGFR)
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Aging kidneys

At the bedside

Nursing considerations

  • Stages CKD: ≥ 90 normal, 60–89 mild, 30–59 moderate, 15–29 severe, < 15 failure.
  • Used to adjust renally cleared drug doses — check before nephrotoxic agents.
