Common causes of a high Magnesium (Mg²⁺)

  • Renal failure
  • Excess magnesium (antacids, laxatives, treatment of pre-eclampsia)
  • Adrenal insufficiency

Nursing considerations

  • Low magnesium causes refractory hypokalemia and hypocalcemia — replace it too.
  • Monitor deep tendon reflexes; loss of reflexes signals magnesium toxicity.
